Lots of folk write and ask me for advice, instructions and general information. I decided that I would put a place on the internet that allows them to visit and see what mischief I am (or have been) up to. Hopefully it will be appreciated - please feel free to press Ctrl + End and go to the bottom of this page and give me some feedback. If you think that it is worth it, please tell your friends, if not, please tell me - thank you.

It is my intention to add something here every 7 to 10 days - the most recent stuff will always be at the top of the page to save you time. My policy and techniques for removing stuff from the bottom - there will only ever be two weeks information shown in this page. At the bottom there will be a link to an index of earlier pages. This way, it will stop the page from becoming too long and unwieldy !

General
A few days ago I was forwarded an EMail warning me about a virus (it transpired that it was an hoax, but never mind !!) within that EMail there was a distribution list with over 430 addresses in it. Out of idle curiosity, I checked if such a list was saleable. It was, money for old rope !! - the Spammers thought it was Christmas come early. I did not and would never sell such a list. The list contained lots of private addresses and lots of military addresses. The sender was a senior military officer !! Im very glad that my name was not in that list !!

Please do NOT fall into the same trap !!

Some time ago (September 2001), I wrote some notes on this subject click here to see them - they still seem as relevant now as they were then.

If this tickles your interest, there are some more notes on security of EMails in general - it is not quite the same subject - but click here to see them

Whilst my motor car (a five year old Volvo S40) was being repaired after my accident three weeks ago, I was loaned a courtesy car (a bog standard Nissan Micra with about 800 miles on the clock). The only thing that I really missed was the Cruise Control !! Several friends commented that "it was not me".
BUT
It only cost 6,000 - that really focused my mind - why do I need a Volvo ??

I'm not sure why I told you that, but Im sure interested in the question and answer !!

Got my car back from the repairers on Tuesday - what a joy. Not quite finished yet - needs a new front bumper still. (No, don't even ask !!)
On Tuesday at about midday, I was asked it I would do some free teaching unemployed folk for a couple of mornings a week. Starting the next day !!

IT skills - I have chosen the title "Getting the best out of computers"

Daft me said yes. Bit like going back to work !! Very enjoyable and satisfying. Giving something back to the world - seems to me like that is a proper thing to do - every ablebodied person should try it !!

On Friday Morning, I took a trip up the A1 to see my mother in Lincolnshire. What a pleasant journey and nice few days in an area of England that proceeds at a completely diferent place to West London.

On the Saturday we took a liesurely wander through the Lincolnshire lanes to a pleasant little town called Louth. If you labour under the impression that Lincolnshire is flat and boring, please humour me and try a couple of things

It is a much under-rated county, mebbe I should keep my gob shut tho' in case it gets all busy and 'orrible - hehehehe.

Scary ???
The name Internet World is synonymous with Penton. I have always believed, and found, Penton to be a sober and sensible organisation. I got one of their newsletters that pointed me to
and internet story you need to read the whole page to get a balanced view of the subject. Should I be scared I wonder??

Bank Holiday wanderings.
On the Bank Holiday Monday, I had a day out. First was spent having a look at the Chesterfield Canal. We explored around the stretch through Worksop. it was really pleasant. We visited the BW Marina at ShireOaks it was pleasant, clean and tidy. Sadly rain stopped play ! I have pretty well decided to have a week on a hire boat and cruise the length of the Chesterfield.

We have lunch at a canalside pub called the Lock-Keeper in the Rhodesia district of Worksop. Pleasant, spacious and very good food. Good variety of dishes to choose from, children and vegetarians are catered for. If you are in the area, well worth a try.

I have spotted the signs to the "Earth Centre" on numerous occasions as I have driven up and down the A1M (Doncaster ByPass) - this time I decided to visit. It is a really interesting place. I have no doubt that I will return and explore it more slowly and in much more detail. It is equally good for children and adults. It makes a good day out.

You can have a preview by visiting www.earthcentre.org.uk.
It's address is The Earth Centre, Denaby Main, Doncaster, DN12 4EA
It is adjacent to Conisbrough railway station.
Give it a try - you will enjoy it.

Links
In the olden days there was a weekly publication called the Radio Times and later the TV Times. For all that I know, they may still be published !! I don't buy or read them, or anything like them. My ever on laptop sits on the arm of my comfortable armchair and there is an icon that is a shortcut to something called Digiguide. It is brilliant, download a free copy from www.digiguide.com/ - I really do recommend it to you.

I have told you on several occasions that you should beware the wicked (or at least misguided) folk out there in cyberspace trying to get into other folks computers and (at best) cause mischief or (at worst) to do damage. They do it by popping down your internet connection (usually your telephone line) and looking if you left the door open. If you have, they will be in !!
You can check how tightly your door is closed if you visit HACKER WHACKER Remote Computer Network Security Scan
To make it a bit easier for you to remember, this site is shown on the left hand side of my own web site www.peterbyers.com
Just in case you are wondering what the intruders can do to your PC, let me give you some ideas. Please do NOT try this, but if you go to the DOS or COMMAND prompt on your PC and type format c:, you would completely wipe out your hard disk drive - transforming your PC into a useless lump of junk until you get Windows re-installed. Hackers can do this if you let them !! Usually though they are less obvious - they do things like EMailing all of your passwords and other secret stuff to themselves.
You may know or remember that I an delighted to be a "Man of the Cut" - in other words a Canal Enthusiast. I think that I have probably told you before, but I will tell you again that a lovely place to start is George's Canal Boating in the UK & Europe.
George Pearson is the guy that runs that page/site - he also runs a newsgroup/forum/mailing list, call it what you will. You may like to join it for a while and see how the "other half" of the world lives (it is a bit infectious) - visit to join - it costs nowt - you do not need to do anything     !! Unless you want to be swamped by EMails, choose the Digest option !!
Remember please that if you are in a group of folks in any area of life, a percentage of the conversation will be banal/trivial/frivolous/maybe uninteresting and the rest will be interesting/exciting/relevant (I will not dare to give any idea of the percentages) - the Canal Email List is no exception, it reflects a group of real life folk.

Wall Plaques
I am reasonably well known for having pet sayings that I use to death for a week or two before getting a new one. One day recently I was sitting scratching my bum and thinking about nothing in particular - when my brain was disturbed by an idea !! It was to put some of my sayings on "Wall Plaques"

So I did - the one for this week is indifference

I will publish new ones occasionally.
