Lots of folk write and ask me for advice, instructions and general information. I decided that I would put a place on the internet that allows them to visit and see what mischief I am (or have been) up to. Hopefully it will be appreciated - please feel free to press Ctrl + End and go to the bottom of this page and give me some feedback. If you think that it is worth it, please tell your friends, if not, please tell me - thank you.

I have posted this Web Page more or less weekly for over three months. The number of folks visiting has dropped to a mere handful. I guess that it is not very interesting. Probably, I bore you !! Maybe I am too busy, too idle, too bereft of things to tell you about!!

I have come to the conclusion, that it will be occasional from now on - that means it could be weekly, monthly or whenever. If you want to be told when it is posted, and jou are not already on the Mailing List, do click here to add yourself to it.

If the number of visits goes back up again, then it will return to regular weekly !!

General
I am sorry about the long time that has elapsed since the last version of ChitChat.

It has to do with the climate
I feel like I am sitting in a shower - there seems to be water cascading down from my forehead.
I keep looking behind me to see if there is a pool of grease on the floor where part of my fat has melted !!
I really must loose lots of weight - hehehehe.
AND
I must examine the piggy bank and see if there are sufficient pennies to afford to install Air Conditioning.

It also has to do with the fact that I have been doing some interesting work helping three sets of folks with their problems relating two their business.
It also has to do with the fact that I have been doing some interesting work helping to sort out three or four sets of technical computer problems.

It also has to do with the fact that I am an idle old git - hehehehe

But, anyroad up, it is here now !!

Last Weekend
A mate of mine has a narrowboat. He is also a member of the Richmond Yacht Club. His boat, the NB Cassius, is normally moored at Willowtree Marina in Yeading Middlesex. The RYC has an annual "do" at Dachet (very very near to Windsor) every August Bank Holiday weekend.
Three or four years ago, he had just got over having heart bypass surgery and wanted someone to go with him, the thought behind it was "collapsing at the tiller of a NarrowBoat on the River Thames is not a tremendously idea" It has to be said that cruising the Thames on a NarrowBoat is not one of my most favourite occupations - but he is a mate, and one does things for mates !! The trip was OK. From joining the Thames at Brentford to arriving at Dachet took seven hours.

This time, at about two O'Clock pm on Saturday we drove both our cars to Dachet, he left his and came back in mine.

Around 3:30 we set out from WillowTree Marina heading for Brentford. It was a sweltering day (we could have fried eggs on the roof of the boat - we didn't, of course). I walked and set every lock on the journey. Killing but satisfying work and I think that I probably lost several pounds weight !!

Just after the bottom of the Hanwell flight, the throttle cable decided it no longer wished to be connected to the lever on the side of the engine. It happened whilst I was steering, I managed to drift into the bank. Half an hour later it was fixed !! My over-riding thought was "thank the Lord it did not happen on the Thames" that really really would have terrified me !!!

We tied up for the night near Thames Lock Brentford. Paid a quick visit to and had a couple of smashing pints at the Brewery Tap pub at the side of the Canal. Then to bed !! By the way the Brewery Tap really really is worth a visit and its food is the very best of Home cooking - give it a try !!

Woke and got up just before seven O'Clock am on Sunday. Ate a fried breakfast. Waited for the lock to open and let us out on to the Thames at quarter to Ten. Sailed to Dachet. The world and his wife were out on the Thames. Huge queues at the huge Thames locks (so different to those on the cut !!). Arrived at Dachet at 19:45 in the evening. Shattered !! Gawd it was so un-relentingly hot. The Lock Keepers go home at 19:00 so yours truly was Lock Keeper at the last lock (Old Windsor) - it gives a funny feeling of power - huge lock, dwarfing the lone NarrowBoat in its Chamber !!

In conclusion, a killer of a day - but these are the sorts of things that you do for mates !!
PS - I was the cook for the journey (the Brentford to Dachet was non stop, eat on the move !!)

This weeks hotel
I visited some freinds in Norfolk. We crossed the boundary into Cambridgeshire into the town of Wisbech for them to do some business. We looked at loads of places with a view to eating at them. We eventually chose:-

The White Lion Hotel.,
5, South Brink,
Wisbech
Cambridgeshire
PE13 1JD
Telephone 01945 463060
No web site - but details on a very decent web page:-
www.smoothhound.co.uk/hotels/whitelionhot.html
Very nice place.

Pleasant staff.

Very decent food - well served in pleasant surroundings

Overlooks the Rive Nene.

Close to the centre (where it all happens) in Wisbech.

I recommend it - give it a try!!

Also - I visited some of my old freinds that work at Cliveden - it still is really really a smashing place ! BUT the expression "if you have to ask the price, you cannot afford it" still applies.

If you choose to spoil yourself and visit, ask for Michael Challoner (he is the Butler) and tell him "Byers sent you" !!

Links
You may have heard that some Web Sites that you visit, leave crap on your computer (Spy Ware) to see which sites you visit - they generally do it by leaving cookies !! (and other stuff) I have been using something called AdAware every week. Just after I used it this morning, I thought "I wonder if there are any upgrades" I visited www.lavasoftusa.com and there was - I downloaded and installed it - ran it, suprise surprise, it found six infections that the old version didn't even know about !!

If you want to learn, visit :- www.w3schools.com/default.asp it looks quite good to me.
If you are looking for a Virtual Telephone Switchboard for your organisation (even for your family) visit:- www.voicexchange.co.uk - it looks quite good to me.
