Lots of folk write and ask me for advice, instructions and general information. I decided that I would put a place on the internet that allows them to visit and see what mischief I am (or have been) up to. Hopefully it will be appreciated - please feel free to press Ctrl + End and go to the bottom of this page and give me some feedback. If you think that it is worth it, please tell your friends, if not, please tell me - thank you.

It is my intention to add something here every 7 to 10 days - the most recent stuff will always be at the top of the page to save you time. Sometime in the future, I have decided my policy and techniques for removing stuff from the bottom - there will only ever be two weeks information shown in this page. At the bottom there will be a link to an index of earlier pages. This way, it will stop the page from becoming too long and unwieldy !

I take this opportunity to offer my sympathy and condolences
to the British Royal Family
on the sad occasion of
the death of
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth,
the Queen Mother

Feedback
One or two folk have said nice things about this page    . The number of visitors have fallen     but at the moment, I am still minded to carry on writing it each week.

BUT

it would be really good if every visitor to it, took a few seconds to invite a few friends to visit it please - thank you

New stuff in Byers Writings
Several folks have asked me to show / tell them how to create a web site in a few simple steps. They have said that they do not want to become instant experts, just able to do a few simple things. About half want to do it for their business and the other half want to create a site that tells anyone, that wants to look, about their family, its members, interests, ancestors etc.

See what I have done so far click here

You might like to take a look at a new site that I created - www.peterbyers.com if you do visit it, please put a brief message at the bottom of it to let me know that you visited it - thank you in anticipation (I hope)

There is a Newsgroup that gives me hours of great delight, amusement and entertainment, it is:-
dbase.watercooler Chat, gossip, humor, user group announcements, etc. This group is NOT intended for technical discussions.
In my opinion, it is just how a Newsgroup should be.

This weeks hotel
This week, I have not been to any hotels, but I will tell you about one that I really love - it really is a bit special

The Beetle and Wedge Hotel
Ferry Lane
Moulsford-on-Thames
Oxfordshire
OX10 9JF
Telephone 01494 - 651 381
FAX 01494 - 651 376
This is a really great place at which to stay and/or to eat !!

It is on the side of the River Thames in Oxfordshire.

It is owned and managed by Mr and Mrs Richard and Kate Smith.

If you get sunshiny weather, it is really really very special. I guarantee that if you visit, you will never never forget it.

Northern folk will understand when I say that "there is no side to them", you can just relax and be yourself. Enjoy an informal top hole lunch in the BoatHouse. If you can fit it in, a slightly formal dinner in the conservatory.

It is true to say that you remember an hotel by the last meal you eat there - usually breakfast, well you will not be dissappointed with your breakfast here. If they know what you want, that is what you will get - explain your order carefully and clearly.

I defy you not to enjoy it - I have no hesitation in commending it to you.

Recommendations
First there are a couple of computer magazines that I think are very interesting and informative
The first is InternetWorks - a light read.
The second is PC Magazine - a deeper read.

I like to think of myself as a "man of the cut" - I sold my last Narrowboat a few months ago and am looking for a Wideboat (yes "the cut" is an affectionate name for Canals, or Inland Waterways). Eventually I will find one that attracts me at a price that I can afford. In my wanderings, i visited a boatbuilder to see what they had on offer. While I have not yet done any business with them, they impressed me mightily. They appeared a professional, business like, knowledgable organisation that operated a very tidy busy boatyard and they cared about what their customers wanted. I drove away salivating (positively drooling) over what I had seen. On that basis, I feel able to recommend them in here.

Feedback
I got a feedback reply from a man who was unconstructively vitriolic - for a few moments, I thought should I abandon this project now. BUT then I got four effusive "well done thank you" replies - that restored any loss of will.

BUT

It has interested and slightly bemused me that the complainant (or other folk using his PC) have revisited the site (and even this page) several times - scratches his head in bemusement!!

Anyroad up - thankyou to the folk who sent the appreciative replies.
. . . . . and the other guy too even !!

This weeks hotel
What is an hotel - a place that provides a place for you to lay your head and provides food - in return for you giving them money !!

Going by that definition, the place below could be called an hotel - and it is great.

BURTREE COUNTRY HOUSE
York Road
Hutton Sessay
Thirsk
North Yorkshire

Fax: 01845 501596

On Monday, I thought that I would spend a weekend with a lady from Yorkshire and her two children. I wondered where I could take them. I fell across a place called Lightwater Valley theme park, it is just north of Ripon.

I thought that I would drive up on Friday and pick them up on Friday afternoon, and have a couple of nights away. I put Lightwater Valley into Copernic - as well as several sites for the park (the park's own site was not responding for at least 48 hours) there were two hotels in the list. Both looked good. The first one in the list would not answer the telephone - it rang and rang and rang . . .

The second answered and I spoke to Dawn, the owner - a down to earth Yorkshire lady with a smile in her voice. It went from there and was brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble.

We arrived on a sunny Friday evening - it was and easy place to go into. No side, no airs and graces. Nothing was too much trouble.

Go there, you will love it.

One of the ways that I can judge hotels is the way that they deal with problems - they do happen you know even in the poshest five star hotels !!! If you come out of the problem with a smile on your face, well that is a good hotel. This wonderful place came through this test with flying colours - on three days - an Aga that wouldn't - a deep fat fryer with an heating element that wouldn't - the local Water Supply Authority that didn't.

All handled with such aplomb, it was wonderful - don't worry, it won't happen when you are there.

Thank you Dawn and Niel !!

Oh and by the way, I forgot to tell you - it is a real life active working farm. The kids and I both helped to feed some sheep and to round up some escaped sheep.

tele2
Tele2 promised that they would be there at around 9 OClock on the Friday - I got a call at 10:30 saying that they would be there in an hour and a half - I told them not to bother because I would not be there.

They then said they would be here at around 9 OClock on Tuesday. They arrived at 10:20. They were very efficient and businesslike. After 20 minutes sitting on my chimney, they came to the conclusion that some damned fool had built a block of flats between me and the arial on Hillingdon Hospital and that the signal was not good enough to allow the installation to be completed. If I had have lived three doors either side of my current place, it would have been OK. Pity !!

I have to thank Wyn Morgan for trying to look after me.

There is a little cafe in the entrance to Lightwater Valley theme park near Ripon - it is brilliant - they really care, they are well worth a visit.

The Shopping Village at the Lightwater Valley theme park near Ripon is good - lots of interesting stuff.

In the Lightwater Valley theme park near Ripon, next to the GoKarting track is a place to eat, if you don't have half an hour to spare to wait for some fairly bland fare, don't bother.

If you want an experience, try the "Ultimate" ride at the Lightwater Valley theme park near Ripon, I did - Oh Lord !!!          - 'nuff sed !!

I have a very very old four piece suite (sprung interior - no foam) looking a bit tatty (truthful folk would say very very tatty !!). Upholsterers prepared to re upholster it are a little like hens teeth - a bit rare. Ones that are near me and do not require me to take out a mortgage are even rarer!!
BUT
I found a company that can and will. Three of the four pieces were taken away last Monday. I will tell you the story when the job is done.
