Lots of folk write and ask me for advice, instructions and general information. I decided that I would put a place on the internet that allows them to visit and see what mischief I am (or have been) up to. Hopefully it will be appreciated - please feel free to press Ctrl + End and go to the bottom of this page and give me some feedback. If you think that it is worth it, please tell your friends, if not, please tell me - thank you.

I have posted this Web Page more or less weekly for over three months. The number of folks visiting has dropped to a mere handful. I guess that it is not very interesting. Probably, I bore you !! Maybe I am too busy, too idle or maybe even too bereft of things to tell you about!!

This page has been replaced by ByersBlog.

I have lef the contents of the last "ChitChat" page below - I dont know why, but there you are, I have !!

Welcome after a six week break
There has been a long break since the last issue of ChitChat. I have a pile of bits of paper and odds and sods that are to be mentioned in the next issue - the pile has got so big, it seemed like a good idea to produce this one. I hope that there will be something that is of interest to you.

PC World is expensive
Periodically, I get worried about the security of the stuff on my PC. Then I set off one of my well intentioned "BackItUp" regimes. Even though I understand the risk, the regimes tend to die out as time passes.

Well, some good friends of mine recommended an easy to use BackUp product. It will allow me to do overnight incremental unattended backups to CD ROM. It is called Retrospect and it comes from Dantz.

I looked on the Action website and found the product:-

Retrospect Express BackUp
Version 5.6
Action Part Number 14.70.37
At Action, the price including VAT is 37.59

Regular readers of ChitChat will know that there is a PC World store a couple of minutes from me. Well I wandered up there and asked an uninterested, half asleep assistant if they sold the product - "never 'erd of it - but you can 'ave a look over there if you like". I resisted the temptation to walk out and had a look over there. To my great surprise I found it.

It was priced at 44.99 - eight pound fourty more expensive - over 20% up on the action price !!

I asked a lively, interested, helpful member of staff about lower prices elsewhere. He said "we have a Price Match scheme - that will let you pay the lower price" - whooppee I thought !! When I mentioned Action, he laughed and said "oh - that is mail order and internet - we only match real shops". I rather think that Action would clam to be "real" !!!

You guessed it - weak old me still bought it - BUT imagine if it was the same percentage on a 2000 Laptop PC.

Oxford Internet Institute
There is an Organisation called the Oxford Internet institute - it is a department of Balliol College. You can read all about it at www.oii.ox.ac.uk

It ran a Launch Conference called "Casting a Wider Net" at the Said Business School in Oxford on Friday 27th September 2002

I attended in the hope that I might learn or contribute something to the venture.

The Said Business School is a very well appointed, interesting building - modern, but well in keeping with the beautifull older academic buildings in Oxford.

The morning proceedings were interesting, amusing and exciting. Even though the Master of Balliol said repeatedly that a major part of the days purpose was to listen to the audience, I did not detect much evidence of the listening. I formed the impression (wrongly - I hope) that it was going to be an high powered talking shop with little interest in, or influence on the "real" internet. That made me very sad. I fear that I a not going to learn very much from it. Sadly, I am unlikely to be able to contribute anything to the venture - it seems to me that they are only interested in academics and have no place for folk like me.

Ah well, never mind Eh !!

Maybe you will find it useful and interesting

By the way, I did not stop for the "syndicate" sessions after lunch.

Cliveden - again
Those of you that know me well, will remember that several years ago, Cliveden became my second home. I grew out of it a bit though. It was still a brilliant place to be at - but it had lost a bit of its "specialness".

Well - I have been back a few times recently and, much to my great joy and delight it is on the road back up to being very very special again. To use a phrase coined by the first Butler in the houses re-incarnation as an hotel, Michael Holiday, "everything is pointing towards happiness".

In my 'umble opinion, two of the major players in the road back are two folk that I like to think of as good mates, Michael Chaloner and Mister Duarte (more properly known as Duarte Arez Cintra). Thank you gentlemen.

The place is awesome, but should not overawe you. But, if you need to ask the price, then beware - you may not be able to afford it.

The Spread Eagle at Thame
Thame is a nice country town, about which one of my fiends predicted "in about five years, it will be the new Marlow". It has a lovely hotel called the Spread Eagle. (if you are a reader, there is a book called "AN INNKEEPERS DIARY" by John Fothergill. I am priveledged to have a copy from a limited edition of 335 copies. It is inscribed by the present owner, David Barringtom.) Sadly for the past three years or so, I have missed out on visiting it.

BUT

I have been back a couple of times in the last two or three weeks. Oh what have I missed, it is a lovely indescribably special place. I have re-met David and Sarah Barrington, a great joy. How terrible it is when friends fall out of touch !! Anyroadup - we are back in touch again and it feels good.

Do give it a try - if you are near, eat, drink, relax and watch the world go by. If you are not near, visit and stay overnight - ask for the "Sir John Geilguid suite" - it is a bit special

Red Beck
I have friends in a place called Fitzwilliam, between Wakefield, Pontefract and Doncaster. The do not have spare beds. So regular readers will recall that I have found and stayed at nice "posh-ish" hotels like Waterton Park and Rogerthorpe Manor. I have passed a place called the Red Beck Motel and Restuarant several time on the way into Wakefield.

On my last visit, the Devil got into me and I though "sod it, I will try the Red Beck". So I did. Posh Hotel it aint, it does not pretend to be. Cafe with good nosh and lovely Yorksire Ladies cooking and serving it - great characters and a good giggle - thank you ladies. With rooms - very well appointed, clean and comfortable.

For good quick nosh and a place to lay your head for the night, it is great.

AND

It is less than a quarter of the price of the other places !!

I shall return - and I recommend it to anyone needing a bed in that part of the world.

Terry and Bernie's place
You will no doubt remember two of my friends have moved to a pub near Kings Lynn. It is a bit to far to pop up for a quick bite and pint at lunch time sadly. But, I have been up several times and the place is starting to be the "Place to be", they are doing real well. The locals love them. Do NOT drive past without calling in !!

Safety from Byers
A week or so ago, I sent an EMail about the BugBear virus to lots of folk that I know. Several folk have written back saying thank you and that it was most useful.

As it seemed so useful, here is a link to a copy of it

.

More Safety from Byers In a weekly magazine that pops though my door, called ZDNetWeek Issue 4 28th October 2002 (available at www.zdnetweek.co.uk - note the date and issue number), the was a very interesting article. The headline was Outlook Express flaw speeds hacking - it is about a problem with the product that lets hackers get to your PC and its contents.

I recommend that you have a look at the article.

It has provoked me to write a web page that examines Safety for your PC in a very simple none technical way !! The page is at moresafety.htm

CD's as business cards
See the www.e-promocard.com web site.

They are brilliant - the 21st century way to promote yourself (put your CV on one) or your business. They really are the way to go. They would not cost more than one pound for tiny quantities. For bigger quantities the price drops considerably.

Imagine giving a potential employer or client a business card which can be played on a PC - showing words, video's, animations and sound. Now is that good or is it good.

If you want to talk about it - please do not hesitate to contact me!!

A word of warning, if you try to write them yourself, do NOT try to use Adaptec Direct CD. Down load a copy of the Magic CD/DVD Writer from www.binarymagics.com

Sending Personalized EMails
If you read the words on "Safety from Byers" above, you might be interested to know that it was sent to a mailing list of over 90 folk. All of them thought that it was an individual EMail sent from me to them. None of them knew that they were part of a mailing list.

If you send EMails to more than one person, you may be interested in looking at www.textsafe.com/biglist.htm it explains how - it is simple !!

Try it sometime, it is worth it !!
A couple of us tried to get a drink and a bar snack at about 12:15 pm at
The Barn Hotel.,
Ruislip
Middlesex
it was open but being rebuilt - we did not have a problem with that !! A nice receptionist took us to the bar. It was with indifference and no enthusiasm we were told that the bar opened at 12:30 pm and that probably some food could be obtained then.

We left and went to

The Coach and Horses.,
Ickenham
Middlesex

An Ember Inn

Spacious, airy and light

Pleasant, interested, efficient, vivacious staff

Good food, well and quickly served

Seemed like nothing was too much trouble

I recommend it - give it a try!! (I most certainly will)

Want to have an easier way to make mobile contact with the internet - am seriously thinking of upgrading to an XDA.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated
